Low Carb Substitutes For Common Foods
Filed under Low Carb FAQs, Low Carb Talk
Why do you need low carb substitutes for common food? Well, anytime you take on the task of committing to a lowcarbs diet, it hits you. Boom, you can’t eat cake. Boom, you can’t eat pasta. Boom, you can’t eat a box of Twinkies. All non low carb foods. For those that have done a low carbs diet in the past, it’s not as shocking as it is to those who are attempting a lowcarbs lifestyle for the first time.
Don’t worry; it’s really not that difficult.
As a matter of fact, large amounts of people new to the low carb lifestyle actually start getting excited within the first few days, because they’re probably eating foods that they haven’t eaten in a really long time. Big juicy steaks (my favorite), hot sizzling pork chops dripping with grease, or an omelet with so much cheese you can’t even tell it’s an omelet.
I mean seriously, that’s good stuff, right?
Now, of course, it takes time to adjust to a new way of eating, no matter what diet you choose. This is especially true with a low carb diet because we’ve been brainwashed over the last 50 years with diets that are high in complex carbohydrates.
No wonder over half of America is obese….DUH!
Open your mind. This is not your Momma’s low calorie diet. Low carbing will change your life, sure, but it’s all for the better. When you’re able to dig out clothes from three years before when you were twenty pounds lighter, and they actually fit, you’ll thank yourself for making the big change.
The point of this post is to help you get the most out of your low carb experience. There are plenty of low carb substitutes for common foods that you’re used to which will help you transition a lot easier.
For instance, one of the more popular items is sugar substitutes. These are an absolute god send when baking up a lowcarbs dessert (which, trust me, you will), and although artificial sweeteners affect people differently, speaking in general, you’ll want to keep plenty on hand.
Perhaps the #1 challenge that new low carb dieters have to overcome is bread. Bread is such a basic and household staple; it can be a hard habit to break. Now, there are low carb bread recipes, but they should really only be used in latter phases of the diet. A lot of so called “low carb breads” contain hidden carbs and can throw your whole game off, so when the time comes that you want to try it out, find a recipe online and make it yourself so that you know you won’t be setting back all your progress. Trust me, down the line, Almond flour and flax flour will be your best friend!
The next obstacle? Pasta. A lot of people LOVE pasta (me included). But think about it…sure, noodles are good; however the best part of a lot of pastas is the cheese, the meat, the veggies, and the sauce. Instead of noodles, find something else to put all those toppings over (of course, with a low carb sauce). Squash makes a surprisingly fantastic substitute for pasta noodles. Zucchini, spaghetti squash, eggplant, there are tons of possibilities. Pile on the toppings, and again, go easy on any lowcarbs sauce. My personal favorite is the cheese…think about a lasagna made with eggplant and 5 different cheeses…mmm.
Potatoes? No problem. Ever heard of a handy little vegetable called Cauliflower? You can puree boiled or steamed cauliflower with lots of butter and make the creamiest fake mashed potatoes you’ve ever had. Even a huge number of non low carb dieters prefer mashed cauliflower to potatoes any day of the week. Add cheese, bacon and sour cream for an out of this world delicious meal.
I hope I’ve given you some inspiration on different substitutes for low carb dieting. There are many more, but the above are some of the most common. Do your research and most importantly, have fun with it! Since living a low carb lifestyle, I’ve never been more creative in the kitchen!

Steamed and mashed cauliflower is a wonderful replacement for mashed potatoes! It is surprising how much like the “real thing” they are. I’ve been adjusting our eating habits to be lower in carbs and it shows. 30 pounds lost so far, just don’t forget the exercise too.

If I go on a low carb diet, will it lower the amount of good bacteria in my gut? Also, if I take probiotics, will they be able to be sustained in my gut on a low carb diet or will the probiotics be ineffective in providing benefits if I am on a low carb diet?

Have to disagree with you on the point of using artificial sweeteners. They are bad, bad, bad for your health big time, with both aspartame and sorbitol being linked with cancer and saccharin totally known to cause cancer!
Better to try and go without the sweet stuff altogether, or if you have to have sweet, use honey or molasses in moderation – way better than refined sugar.

A possible downside however, in any low carb vegetarian diet is deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals. Iron is known to be one example. For vegetarians, an excellent iron source is beans and nuts.

Nice article. Wholemeal foods like pasta and bread are OK, it’s their white flour counterparts which are the ones to cut out. More protein please and remember that all fats aren’t bad, just some of them.

Health is wealth they say but how can we maintain that healthy life style is what seems to be the most difficult thing that people are really confused about, in living healthy the kind of food we eat ,matters a lot if you eat more fruits than junk food or a well balanced diet packed with daily exercise and regular water intake one will definitely achieve that aim.

Low-carb diets have been really full of health as prolonged as we do not bucket them with tall fat protein. These help people feel full longer, and are useful in e any diet plan. However, high consumption of these foods that generally contain refined carbohydrates, can actually cause weight gain rather than weight loss.

Organic vs Non-Organic Food
Over the past two decades the world has become increasingly health and environmentally conscious. The world of social activism is no longer confined to protest marches and leaflet campaigns. Today, consumers realize that they have the power to evoke change by voting with the most important tool at their disposal, their wallets. Today, it is a well known fact that if you want a cleaner environment and healthier food you should choose organic products.
What makes food organic? In strictly scientific terms, organic substances contain carbon, the building block of life. By this definition, everything that we eat is technically organic. However, agricultural parlance has changed the definition of organic when it relates to food and other consumables. Inorganic food encompasses everything that organic food is not.
Organic food must be free from all synthetic chemicals.
This starts at the ground level when a farmer prepares his field. He cannot use any petroleum-based fertilizer or chemically altered material in his soil. Manure and compost are acceptable natural products; Miracle Gro is not.
Chemicals are also not allowed for pest or disease control. A farmer can treat his crops with insecticidal soap or neem oil, but cannot use store-bought sprays unless they are certified organic.
Organic food cannot be genetically altered in any way.
Traditionally, changes to plants and livestock were accomplished through selective breeding techniques and hand pollination. These techniques are still certified organic.
Genetically modified food, or GM food, has been tampered with at the genetic level. Sometimes varieties of plants have been cross-bred to create hardier or tastier strains. GM seeds can be drought resistant or have higher yields. Purists feel GM technology tampers with the work of Mother Nature and is therefore inorganic.
Organic food cannot come in contact with inorganic food.
In order to ensure that pesticides or other chemical treatments don’t rub off on organic produce, it must be packaged and shipped separately from conventionally farmed food.
Proponents of organic food say that the products are healthier than conventional produce. Fewer chemicals mean fewer carcinogens. They also say that the food just tastes better. At the same time, organic soil may still produce run-off, but it isn’t toxic run-off that will permanently damage the water table. Animals that are fed exclusively on organic products, such as free-range chickens or grass-fed beef are generally believed to be treated more humanely, though this isn’t always the case.
Summary:
1. Organic and inorganic foods are differentiated by their farming processes, not their chemical makeup.
2. Organic food is chemical free, GM free, and free from contact with inorganic food while inorganic food is anything that doesn’t meet those strict guidelines.
3. Many consumers believe that organic food is healthier, tastes better, and is better for the environment than inorganic food.
I’ve dedicated my life to what I believe in and what I love which is health and being healthy.

You want me to give up bread, noodles, AND mashed taters? I don’t know if that’s humanly possible. Fortunately, people who exercise can afford to eat more “bad” carbs, which is a lot easier for me than exchanging foods.

I have been using cauliflower as a sustitute for potatoes for a while, really is a good alternative. Giving up carbs really isn’t too bad once you get started.
